Annual Middlebury Area Land Trust summer day camps for children, located in Middlebury, Vermont.

Camp Descriptions 2017

Our most popular camps for children ages 6-9 years old, 3 sessions: We’ll spend the days wandering, exploring, making forts, playing games, and immersing ourselves in the woods. Our goal is to create a feeling of timeless play as well as working as a team to create our own clan culture for the week. In years past, we’ve built a castle in the woods, followed a deer trail until we actually saw the deer, and trekked all the way to the New Haven river to search for crayfish.  Come adventure in the woods with us while discovering the mysteries of nature, getting comfortable in the outdoors, and most of all, having fun!

Session 1: Naturenauts Camp June 19-23, 9am-3pm
Ages 6-9, $205
Limit 15 campers
We’ve spent 6 years exploring the MALT land- and there is still so much more out there to discover. Join us as we adventure further into the unexplored parts of the land that we know and love. We’ll go past the boundaries of our previous territory, playing games and solving nature mysteries along the way.

Session 2: Down to Earth Camp July 10-14, 9am-3pm
Ages 6-9, $205
Limit 15 campers

This week we’ll be searching, collecting, and identifying the plants and animals of the MALT land. Field guides will be plentiful, nature journals on hand, and the aquarium just waiting to be filled with insects, salamanders and frogs. Join us as we delve into the naturalist side of nature camp.

Session 3: True Nature Camp July 17-21, 9am-3pm
Ages 6-9, $205
Limit 15 campers

This week is for the kids who love games the best. We’ll be playing our old favorites, trying brand new games, and working on creating our own.  We’ll explore the land through this lens, and we may even have special guests coming in to challenge us…. This camp will be light on skills, and heavy on games, so make sure your child is ok with that if you are applying for this week.

Other Age Groups/Special Interest:

Jumping Mouse Camp July 3-7, 9am-12pm
NO CAMP ON TUESDAY THE 4th
Ages 4-5, $125
Limit 12 campers

What’s This! What’s That? As a parent of a pre-school age child, you’ve surely heard those words countless times.  Kids already possess a natural sense of magic and wonder, and the Jumping Mouse program creates a space that fosters their inherent curiosity. Come join us as we look under rocks for salamanders, build fairy houses, and explore the MALT land. Jumping mouse camp helps build a foundation of comfort and confidence in the woods, and our goal is for your preschooler to feel empowered being in the woods by the end of the week!

Adult Summer Camp Weekend May 6-7 9am-3pm
For adults 18+ (age16-18 considered on a case by case basis), $150

Maybe your kids have been going to MALT for years and you want to see some of the amazing places they’ve discovered, or maybe you want to get out in the woods for the day, or maybe you have an interest in ancient forms of shelter building or you want to see how to make fire with a hand-drill. Maybe as a child you had a dream of building your own secret hide-out in the woods, complete with tunnels and towers. Come join us on the MALT land as we learn different shelter building techniques, work on fortifying the Castle, make a fire or two, explore and have a ton of fun.

Wildwood Camp  June 27-30

9am Tuesday 6/27 - 10am Friday 6/30
NO CAMP MONDAY June 26th
Ages 10-13

$320-  includes 3 overnights and all meals on overnight days

This camp for preteens/young teens is an opportunity to take their skills further. Wildwood camp is all about belonging. To be important because each person is an integral part of the group. To live in the woods in our own forest village, gathering the things we need from around the land. This year we will start our week at camp and then later in the week canoe down the otter creek to a cave. We’ll explore the caves and camp nearby, hiking back to the MALT land the next day. Thursday night we’ll have a feast and celebration. We will be trying to move across the landscape as easily as possible, bringing only what is absolutely necessary for us to be comfortable and safe. Designed for pre-teens/teens who have either been to our programs before, or have a strong interest in nature survival skills, this camp will allow us to settle further into the land we’ve spent years exploring. The focus will be stretching our comfort level in the woods to include being out at night, camping out for a longer period of time, and gathering food in a variety of ways. Of course there will be lots of jokes, laughing, and storytelling. Campers will bring their own snacks- food for all meals on overnight days will be provided by us. We’ll be canoeing, hiking, playing games, and adventuring.

Artemis Camp July 24-28,  9am-3pm (ends 10am Friday)
(with optional Thursday overnight)
Girls ages 10-13, $225
Limit 15 campers

Who is Artemis? She is huntress of the woods, protector of animals, connected to the moon, youth, independence and self-reliance. This week, a group of 10-13 year-old girls and two female instructors will gather on the MALT land to explore what it means to be "wild". As a group, we'll decide how we want to be. We'll be building, making natural paints and pigments, gathering plants for the apothecary, singing songs, shooting bows and arrows, improving our knife skills, playing sneaking and stealth games, doing some mapping, and much more. There will be an optional overnight on Thursday night.

Athena Girls Camp July 31-August 3 9am Monday-12 pm Thursday
Ages 11-14,
$320-  includes 3 overnights and all meals on overnight days. Let us know about food restrictions.

Limit 12 campers
This week we’ll test out living in the woods for three days and nights as a clan. We’ll be going on night hikes and playing games, singing and creating songs together, collecting plants for tea, crafting, and generally being ourselves in the forest. We’ll either build our shelters for sleeping or choose to sleep in tents. On the last night there will be an optional solo sleep-out (bug netting encouraged!!) when each girl has the option sleep in a spot alone (close enough to adults for safety but unable to see another person). We’ll wake to a celebration breakfast and tell each other the story of our night! Previous attendance is not a requirement, but this week is meant as a continuation of Artemis camp- girls who have attended Artemis (or Wildwood)  in a previous year will be given priority for spots.

River Walkers Camp August 7-11, 9am-3pm *Please note that this camp has a different drop-off site each day
Ages 7-10
$215

Do you love to play like an Otter? Are you excited to explore places that are full of magic and wonder? Or maybe you want to find out what's around that next hill. In this brand new camp, we will follow a stream from its beginning up in the mountains, down to it's end at Lake Champlain. We'll see the waters grow from a small spring to a rushing river, to the slow plodding calm of the Otter Creek, and end up in the quiet deep of Lake Champlain. We will start up in Lincoln, close to one of the sources of the New Haven River. Next we’ll spend the day near Bartlett’s Falls, in and around the water, as well as up the hillside. The third day we’ll spend at “Tin City”, a spot just off of Rt. 116, between Bristol and Middlebury. Day four will be at the confluence of the New Haven and Otter Creek (near Dog Team Road), then we’ll finish our week at Kingsland Bay. We want to spend the whole day exploring at each site, so we can gain a better understanding of how the water connects to the land and to other waterways. This camp includes a lot of water time- while we won’t be swimming in very deep or rough spots, please only sign up your child if you feel they are proficient swimmers. *The registration form has the wrong ages- This camp is for 7-10 year olds! We are working on fixing the reg form asap. You can sign up your 7-10 year old regardless of the error.

Chickadee Camp Aug. 14-18,  9am-3pm
Ages 5-6
$205
Who is Chickadee? Well, she's little and tough, hardy, friendly and great at cooperation. She explores the landscape with her group, asking questions and sharing her discoveries. This year, we've added an extra week just for 5 and 6 year olds, meant as a transition year between Jumping mouse and our older camps. If your child is an older 5 year-old who's been going to kindergarten all year, and they're ready for a longer day but don't meet the 6 year old cutoff for full-day MALT camps, Chickadee camp may be a good fit.  We'll be exploring the MALT land just as we do in all our camps, but the chickadees this week will be setting the pace!
